How to Decorate a Narrow Deck

Fill a narrow deck in a manner that maximizes the small space and supplies an outside area to relax and entertain. Residences like apartment buildings and condos often feature a minimum outdoor area. Small decks can seem to be a struggle to decorate but with the right furniture and accessories for the space, you may make an outdoor haven, regardless of what size the deck is.

Paint Colors & Surrounding Area

Paint or stain the deck a light color, like beige or light brown, to make the deck look bigger. Avoid dark colors, as these minimize a space and make the region seem smaller. Plant flowering bushes and other greenery around the deck area to draw attention away from the small deck and to give scenery.

Outdoor Furniture

Choose furniture that suits the small region and prevent oversize pieces that will cause the deck to look crowded. Put in a bench along one side of this deck for a very long seating area rather than using numerous chairs. Select pieces which serve a multiple function, like a seating bench which also opens for a storage bin. The storage bin can be used to store toys and other outside things out of sight and arranged. Select a narrow rectangular or small circular table with two chairs and put close one corner of this deck — not in the center — for outside dining.

Accent Pieces

Keep decor and accent pieces easy and take advantage of a railing if there is one. Hang planters across the outer side of the railing to provide greenery and flowers but never take up the limited floor area. Hang a bird feeder in the corner of their deck roof or a nearby tree to pull birds. Use the wall of the home or apartment to hang outside art. Choose brightly colored throw cushions and pillows for the outside seating to draw attention to the decor and never the deck dimension.

Lighting

Attach an outside light fixture to the side of the home to provide light for the deck region but never take up floor space. Install a few Tiki torches along the conclusion of the deck — about the ground if a first-story deck — to get festive lighting. Use the deck railing to get lighting requires: hang string lights or easily make your own luminaries with mason jars and masks.
