Oil Pump Removal on a Poulan Chain Saw

Poulan chain saw oil pumps provide oil to lubricate the cutting chain and guide bar, preventing the transferring parts from overheating and damaging the spool. The engine crankshaft spins the petroleum pump worm gear, providing suction to pump the string oil from the chain saw oil cylinder to the string guide bar and cutting chain. The chain saw oil pump is a mechanical part that wears and finally requires removal, and replacement or repair. Never try to run a chain saw with a damaged oil pump or you risk damage to the engine, cutting chain and guide bar.

Remove the engine shroud maintaining screws with a screwdriver and pull the engine shroud from the top of the engine. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug, using spark plug pliers when the wire establishes too stubborn to eliminate hand.

Unscrew the spark plug from the engine cylinder with a spark plug socket wrench. Stuff a 18-inch period of rope to the engine cylinder, leaving a little tail hanging out, to prevent the piston from moving when removing the chain saw engine clutch.

Unscrew the string saw clutch cover/guide bar keeping nuts from the engine assembly with a socket wrench; the search engine assembly is about the right side of the operator’s position. Slide the clutch cover from the engine assembly to gain access to the guide bar and cutting chain.

Pull the chain saw cutting chain from across the guide bar and cutting chain drive sprocket with gloved hands to acquire access to the chain saw engine clutch and clutch drum. Eliminate the guide bar from the clutch cover/guide bar mounting studs by hand and then set aside.

Unscrew the chain saw engine clutch from the engine crankshaft with a chain saw engine clutch removal tool and ratchet wrench. The chainsaw engine clutch comes with left-handed threads, so flip the clutch removal tool clockwise to loosen the chain saw engine clutch. Slide the clutch thrust washer and clutch drum from the chain saw engine crankshaft by hand to gain full access to the guide bar plate.

Eliminate both guide bar plate retaining screws from the guide bar keeping plate with a screwdriver. Slide the guide bar plate off the guide bar mounting studs by hand to access the oil pump and oil pump parts.

Unscrew both oil pump retaining screws with a screwdriver. Pull the oil pump marginally down the engine crankshaft, away from the engine assembly, to access the oil pump elbow matching keeping screw. Unscrew the oil pump elbow matching retaining screw from the elbow fitting in addition to the oil pump.

Pull the oil pump elbow matching free from the oil pump assembly. Slide the petroleum pump from the engine crankshaft free from the engine assembly.
