Holiday Magazine voted San Diego "the only area in the United States with perfect weather." This city has beautiful weather year round with an average daily temperature of 70º. There is a wide variation in temperature within short distances due to the topography of the land. You can enjoy coastal, mountain and desert environments all in the space of one day.
The weather is moderated by the Pacific Ocean, resulting in relatively cool summers and warm winters. Temperatures below freezing are rare, while hot weather, 90 degrees and above, are more frequent. Winter is considered the rainy season. The most precipitation falls in January, with an average of 2.28 inches of rain. The warmest month is August, and the highest recorded temperature is 111ºF. The coolest month is December, with the lowest recorded temperature of 29ºF.
San Diego's weather is affected by the "Marine Layer", a giant layer of air in direct contact with ocean water. This moist, cool air covers San Diego at night and recedes during the day. This results in foggy or hazy mornings, which usually have dissipated by noon.
Santa Ana winds are another local weather factor. They are driven down from the mountains to the east, compressing as they descend to sea level, and generating heat and high temperatures. They usually occur in September and October, sometimes in November, bringing temperatures often exceeding 90 degrees. Happily, the heat is offset by very low humidity.
Virtually every day is pleasant in San Diego, allowing the residents to golf, swim, play tennis, bicycle, lie on the beach and do every other possible outdoor activity.
