Houzz Tour: A Glamorous Desert Oasis

Inspired by her love of Bauhaus design and couture clothing fashions from the 1940s, interior designer Jamie Herzlinger made her house to combine these two quite different fashions. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Camelback Mountain foothills from the Arizona desert, Herzlinger built this house as a refuge for her and her family. “This project represents me more than any other,” she says. “It is my design, my preference, and also my design sensibilities.”

Ever since she hails from a family with a rich history in the fashion industry, Herzlinger frequently brings styles and elements to her interior designs which are found in clothes. Luxurious fabrics with tailored details, feminine accents, and daring lighting all combine to create a unique and fashionable home.

“I’d built a house that has been Italian before,” says Herzlinger. “Once I sold it, I desired that the intellectual quietude of streamlines, but with sumptuous tasteful fabrics and furnishings.”

This very simple but lavish breakfast nook is the best example of that aesthetic. Herzlinger set up the corner with a desk out of Holly Hunt and seats by Michael Taylor, with a couch from Ebanista in lieu of two additional chairs. Even though the area is filled with light in the morning, she utilized a daring chandelier by Marian Jamieson for your evening.

Herzlinger made a large, open kitchen which would be suitable for family living. White Calacatta Luna marble has been used for the kitchen counters, while the flooring is made with a durable and hard-wearing Lagos Azul limestone. A dark wenge hardwood with a walnut stain was utilized for its wealthy and gleaming cabinetry.

Architecturally, Herzlinger’s aim was to create a house with a very open floor plan. “I wanted a house where my kids and myself could truly enjoy and use every room without the typical formal floor plan of chambers which are delineated by walls,” Herzlinger says. The diningkitchen, and living spaces are all connected.

Herzlinger outfitted the tasteful and daring dining spaces with a naturally shaped wood dining table from Hudson. The two lucite dining seats along with the beautiful chandelier are all Herzlinger’s custom designs.

The master bath is one of Herzlinger’s favorite rooms in her dwelling. Constructed as a escape after a long day’s work, Herzlinger used elegant Bianco Carrera marble to the flooring and installed a modern freestanding bathtub from WET Style near one of those windows.

Custom mirrors trimmed with female curves were installed onto a mosaic wall made of Bianco Carrara marble micro-tile out of Waterworks. Elegant sconces from Urban Archaeology were placed on each side of the mirrors in lieu of overhead lighting, since lighting from the side will be more flattering.

Round the corner in the master bath, the Bianco Carrera marble proceeds to the shower, with an all-marble seat against one wall. Herzlinger decided to use pau ferro to your cabinetry in the toilet — an exotic wood that’s found in Brazil and Bolivia. Most frequently utilized in guitar manufacturing, pau ferro has a unique grain and coloration which can also be utilized in furniture.

The master bedroom is accessed through pocket doors right outside the shower in the master bath. Herzlinger automatically gravitated towards a more neutral palette, so all of her colors have a gray undertone. Her bed frame is one of her custom inventions, while the chandelier is from Donghia.

“I work long hours, and usually 1 day each weekend,” Herzlinger says. “So by the time that I actually retire for the evening, my bedroom is like my own private bit of Heaven!” Herzlinger custom made a mirrored desk along with lucite seat for a vanity set next to the bed frame. The flooring in this area is American Black Walnut, and is used across the whole house.

A lovely mirrored mosaic instantly lights up this bathroom. The contrast of this flashy feature with all the classic subway tile and natural lines of the wood countertop adds a sense of modern glamour to the room.

Above, blue tile from Ann Sacks outlines the walls of the shower. “I confronted the very same challenges that each and every homeowner faces when attempting to determine how to design their own residence,” says Herzlinger. “You need to think about what kind of design you want, how much space you’ve got, and if that style will work with the location of the house and your lifestyle.”
